The Silence on a Loud Summer Afternoon

Summer afternoons are meant for laughter, cannonballs, and the smell of burgers or steak on the grill. Kids were splashing in the pool, tossing inflatable balls across the water, and running through the grass with Popsicles  melting down their fingers. It was the kind of noisy, joyful afternoon every parent loves.

Nobody expected anything to go wrong.

When the kids scrambled out of the pool to grab a snack, a young boy hesitated at the shallow edge and suddenly became unresponsive. There was no dramatic splash, no cry for help. Drowning or sudden cardiac arrest in aquatic settings is often completely silent.

His mom noticed he wasn’t moving and figured he was just playing one of those zombie games of pretending he was dead. But after a minute went by and when she tapped him on the shoulder, there was no moment. His mom pulled him out of the water immediately. He wasn’t breathing.

In that moment, seconds felt like hours. But another parent at the gathering immediately dropped to their knees, checked for a pulse, and began chest compressions and rescue breaths. The rhythm was steady, deliberate, and focused.

A minute into CPR, the child coughed, gasped, and started breathing again on his own just as the paramedics arrived.
